Workshop #1

What: Design for Content Based Application

Where: Pacific J, Hyatt Regency San Francisco

When: March 3, 9 a.m.

The workshop talked about the necessity to design for the go, this meaning moving from paper to cell phones, laptops, tablets, etc.

It is important to know what time and through what device people consume media.

According to the speaker from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. media is consumed on cell phones. From 10 a.m to 5 p.m. it is consumed through a computer. From 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. media is usually consumed on tablets.

He emphasizes that when we are on the phones phones, we consume media through facebook mostly. He focused on the importance that our school newspaper has a website mobile friendly.

 

No. 1 Take-Away: We need to focus more on our social media followers.

No. 2 Take-Away: Publish on our social media accounts during the time our potential readers are on their mobile devices.

Workshop #2

Who: Piper Jackson, Sevy, Flytedesk

What: Vendor Session: Networking, Résumés and Interviews

Where: Pacific I, Hyatt Regency San Francisco

When: March 3, 10 a.m.

I learned that despite the fact I’m an introvert or timid person, you can still network and interact with with people you don’t know. The key is to be prepared and research who is going to be there and to be informed of the event or meeting you are attending. This will reduce the tension and nervousness you can feel.

Jackson gave some talking points to introduce yourself to others is a friendly manner. For example be prepared, start with “sorry I didn’t mean to interrupt,” and give your information first, ask after. Try to limit your resume to one page when possible and not more than three bullets per item. Less is more, people take a 60 second look at a resume so focus on the best skills and experiences first.

No. 1 Take-Away: Do research about the company you are applying for, this will make you look prepared and interested.

No. 2 Take-Away: Send a thank you note after every interview.

Workshop #3

What: Borrowing from the Pros

Where: Pacific H, Hyatt Regency San Francisco

When: March 3, 1:30 p.m.

Most of our readers scan the page, so we should emphasize graphics and pictures. Be Constantly innovative with your designs, maybe using polls, graphics, diagrams, etc. If I want to be more creative and my editors don’t like it, I won’t take a no for an answer and I will discuss with them a way to make it happen and both are happy with the result.

It is always important to have some form of art in your publication, otherwise just text will overwhelm your reader and you will lose readership.

No. 1 Take-Away: Have fun, while you design. If you enjoy what you are doing most likely your readers will as well.

No. 2 Take-Away: Always ask yourself, why not?

What: Journalist as Mad Science

Where: Pacific M, Hyatt Regency San Francisco

When: March 5, 9 a.m.

Not everything is necessarily a story. Use social media for things like small events, award ceremonies, among others. Photos and headlines can make a great impact on the amount of readers that click on the story. Write about things that most people care about, because ultimately they are your reader.

Ask, because we don’t know who can actually help us in our request. Stay informed even if you don’t like what you read, because being informed is power. Go out there and talk to your students, promot the press even with simple things like cupcakes. Audience engagement is the success of the publication.

No. 1 Take-Away: Don’t let you advisors and staff members to crush your brilliant ideas.

No. 2 Take-Away: Ask yourself if you would read the story. If you are bored with your story, people will be too.

What: Jumpstarting Creativity

Where: Grand A, Hyatt Regency San Francisco

When: March 4, 10 a.m.

Creativity is not being an artistic, it is more about solving a problem. See things that others can’t. Creativity is asking questions, one question can lead to years and years of creative answers. It is a skill that you learn and take practice.

Brainstorming is an important tool to open our mind to new ideas. Kevin Fullerton mentioned seven rules to brainstorming. Participate, capture ideas, share as many ideas as you can, defer judgment, built on ideas… then jump and free will and go crazy.

No. 1 Take-Away: Embrace limitations.

No. 2 Take-Away: When you are brainstorming do It with different people.

What: Keynote Speaker: Investigating Donald Trump

Where: Grand A, Hyatt Regency San Francisco

When: March 4, 11 a.m.

Reality is twisted and modern day  journalists were competing with social media and gossip. Trying to get real information is difficult. Knowledge and facts are not the same thing.

Kurt Eichenwald emphasizes the importance of telling the truth based on reliable facts not whether or not people like it. With time, the real information will confirm your story.

It is important that schools start to report on the real issues. There is no safe place in the real world. We need to prepare students to face that reality.

No. 1 Take-Away: Finding real facts is difficult, but it is necessary to take the time to do things right.

No. 2 Take-Away: Telling the truth is hard but your audience deserves to know the truth.
